17 year old Travis Birnbaum was diagnosed with a stage 3 anaplastic astrocytoma of brain. Essentially a Stage 3 brain tumor. He is five months into a year long chemo therapy treatment. He takes three drugs for five days one week a month. It’s working. His tumor is shrinking. We all hope that it continues to work. This week Trevor dives. Next week it’s round 6 of chemo.
Trevor and his family are on Oahu with the Make A Wish Foundation. Travis’s wish was to learn to Scuba Dive and to dive in Hawaii. After dealing with cancer the challenges of learning to dive were relatively easy for Trevor. Aaron’s is once again delighted to partner with the Make A Wish Foundation.
Travis began his certification in upstate New York at his local dive shop. Today he had his first two ocean dives with Instructor Ed while Instructor Patrick led Travis’s Mom and Sisters (Rebecca, Whitney, and Brianna) on a Discover Scuba Experience. Doug, Travis’s Dad, enjoyed an amazing snorkeling experience that included coming face to face with a surfacing Honu (from an appropriate distance of course!)
Also aboard was Aaron’s Dive Club Member Doug Miles enjoying his birthday dive. One of the benefits of Aaron’s Dive Club is a free dive on your birthday.
Our first dive was at Turtle Canyons. Visibility was excellent! Current was light. Conditions were wonderful for Trevor’s first dive! He knocked out his skills without difficulty and enjoyed touring the reef and seeing many Honu and reef fish, plus a small eel.
Our second dive was at Koko craters, and the Honu were out in force. There were turtles ascending, descending, sleeping, and hanging out at cleaning stations. It was fabulous. Visibility was off he charts with little current.
It was joy diving with Travis and his family. All of us at Aaron’s hope his chemo continues to work well and he recovers fully from this cancer.
